Know Your Rights guides

1.  Housing Rights

  • Fair Housing: Landlords cannot discriminate against you because of your race, religion, national origin, immigration status, or the fact that you receive housing assistance.

  • Section 8 & Rental Programs: Refugees may apply just like anyone else.

  • Right to Safe Housing: You have the right to live in a place that meets health and safety codes.

2. Legal Rights with Police & ICE

  • You do not have to open the door if immigration officers come without a warrant signed by a judge.

  • You have the right to remain silent if questioned by police or immigration.

  • You have the right to an attorney—but in immigration cases, the government does not provide one for free. Many nonprofits offer free or low-cost help.

  • California is a “sanctuary state”: local police generally do not cooperate with ICE for immigration enforcement.

3.  Employment Rights

  • You have the right to work legally with your Employment Authorization Document (EAD) or Green Card.
